Diego Céspedes (Santiago de Chile, 1995) wrote and directed his first short, "The Summer of the Electric Lion" (2018), which won the First Prize at Cannes Cinéfondation. His second short, "The Creatures That Melt Under the Sun" (2022), premiered at Cannes Critics' Week. "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo" has received multiple development awards, including the Irusoin Post-Production Prize at San Sebastián.

Synopsis
Set in 1980s Northern Chile, this queer fable dialogues with the Western and the coming-of-age genres. 11-year-old Lidia grows up in a mining town where violence is learned by imitation. The film uses "magical realism" as a metaphor for collective paranoia; the fear and rumor are more contagious than any virus. This debut by Diego Céspedes was a standout in the "Un Certain Regard" section at the Cannes Film Festival.
