Jequi, a young quilombola boy from Brazil’s Jequitinhonha Valley, faces a daunting challenge: to warn others about the threats that “progress” may bring to his land—particularly the exploitation of natural resources such as the river waters where he plays every day. Drawing on the ancestral wisdom of his people, Jequi devises a simple yet powerful strategy to spread his message: a note in a bottle. Playing in the waters of his homeland, he learns from the elders the importance of protecting land, culture, and ancestry. His journey—woven from dreams, knowledge, and resilience—invites reflection on the urgent need to preserve water and resist predatory mining. Beyond the valley, his message travels to other territories, reaching communities in Brazil, Portugal, and Mozambique, strengthening ancestral ties and highlighting the role of childhood in building a more just and sustainable world.
