Marcelo Martinessi was born in Asunción, Paraguay, in 1973. He studied communication in his hometown and later filmmaking at the London Film School. He directed several short films, including The Lost Voice, winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film in Venice. From 2010 until the 2012 coup d’état, he headed Paraguay’s first public television network. His debut feature, The Heiresses, was screened at the 2018 Berlinale, where it won two Silver Bears, the FIPRESCI Prize, and a Teddy Award.

Synopsis

In 1958 Asunción, Narciso returns from Buenos Aires with a suitcase full of rock and roll records, challenging the Stroessner dictatorship's propaganda. As he introduces the sounds of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, he becomes an involuntary revolutionary in a landscape of forced "decency." Awarded at the Berlinale, this film by the director of "The Heiresses" is a chilling look at the many faces of authoritarianism.
