Synopsis
Marc Stevens, a washed-up singer who now performs in nursing homes, breaks down on a stormy night in the middle of a remote forest. A local man offers to help and takes him in at his isolated house, far from the village. But Marc’s troubles begin when his host mistakes him for someone he once knew. From that moment on, what seemed like an act of kindness turns into a disturbing descent into obsession and control. Throughout this debut feature by Fabrice du Welz, echoes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock, and Straw Dogs by Sam Peckinpah emerge throughout the narrative. Du Welz situates his tale of horror in a remote village inhabited by deeply unsettling characters, crafting an atmosphere both grotesque and eerily compelling. Handled with striking originality, the film blends psychological terror with moments of pitch-black humor, where suffering and submission become central forces driving the story. Calvaire unfolds as a hybrid of road movie, siege narrative, and doomed love story. And as if all this were not enough, a lingering sense of melancholy envelops the entire ordeal, casting a shadow over every step of Marc’s descent.
