Synopsis

The story follows two young men fleeing from a sanatorium—one a resident, the other admitted due to illness—pursued by the latter’s uncle. Director Du Welz focuses on the psychology of his characters and their responses to passion and desire. The constant parallels drawn between them and birds reinforce a strange sense of false freedom: the ability to fly that simultaneously cages their emotions, alienating them from others. A subtle psychological game unfolds in the nuances of their personalities, as they misinterpret love and transform it into a pathological compulsion—one driven by illness, the other by an obsession with freedom. Cinematic references permeate the film, echoing Du Welz’s earlier homages—from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in Calvaire to Apocalypse Now in Vinyan—while here evoking The Night of the Hunter by Charles Laughton.
