Synopsis

In this film, director Volkan Üce explores the delicate balance between religion and commerce embodied by a Turkish-Belgian funeral entrepreneur. Tayfun is the preferred undertaker of the Turkish community in Belgium, many of whom wish to be buried in their ancestral homeland. In his prestigious—and often logistically complex—business, Tayfun navigates the intersection of capitalism and faith. Yet his work does not end at the airport’s cargo gate. There begins the journey of his counterpart in Turkey, firmly convinced that every Turk should rest in their native soil. The film offers a bittersweet and often humorous portrait of a devoted father and sharp-minded businessman, whose compassion is matched only by his instinct for profit. With dry wit, Üce raises urgent questions about identity, migration, and their lingering impact—even beyond death. A singular reflection on displacement, driven by the charisma of its protagonist and a tone that occasionally blurs the line between documentary and fiction. The film premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
